Pain is a symptom that is experienced differently from person to person and requires multidisciplinary treatment. Chronic pain is clinically defined as pain that lasts longer than 3-6 months. Cognitive and emotional factors, proinflammatory cytokines and cortisol as well as organic pathologies play a role in the etiopathogenesis of chronic pain. Mindfulness meditation is a practice based on awareness of one's own inner and outer experiences in the moment. Mindfulness meditation may be effective in the treatment of chronic pain by improving psychological comorbidities such as depression, anxiety, pain catastrophizing, and metacognitive beliefs. The healing effect of mindfulness meditation on chronic pain may be mediated by changes in heart rate variability (HRV), proinflammatory cytokines and cortisol levels.
