Mistletoe is a hemiparasitic plant that can live attached to various plants. In some cultures, it was regarded as a plant that never touched the ground and was ascribed various meanings. It has been used in public medicine for numerous conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, neurological diseases and diarrhea. There are many species of mistletoe plants, and it can be found on various types of plants and shrubs. Subcutaneous forms of standard mistletoe extracts are available in countries like Germany, Austria and Korea. Numerous preclinical studies have explored the potential benefits of mistletoe extract. In the oncology, there have been randomized and controlled studies in various types of cancer, including breast cancer, head and neck cancer, gastrointestinal cancers, gynecological cancers, gliomas, and pancreatic cancer. Although mistletoe extracts seem to demonstrate a survival benefit in some studies, they have often been shown to reduce chemotherapy-related side effects and improve quality of life. No clinically significant drug interactions have been observed when using mistletoe extract concurrently with chemotherapy treatments.
