Balneotherapy is defined as the therapeutic use of baths containing thermal mineral waters, gases and peloids. Although the mechanism is not fully understood, more than one mechanism is thought to be effective. These effects are classified as thermal, physical (mechanical) and mechanical effects. Thermal effects differ according to the temperature of the water as hypothermal, isothermal, thermal and hyperthermal. Buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure and viscosity constitute physical (mechanical) effects. Chemical effects are caused by penetration (absorption), adsorption (deposition) and elution.
