Attention Attraction Methods Used During Invasive Procedures in Children: Effect on Pain And Anxiety
Synopsis
Pain and the resulting anxiety and fear negatively affect the healing process in children. The use of non-pharmacologic approaches has an important place in reducing pain and anxiety experienced by children due to invasive interventions. Attention attraction methods are non-pharmacological approaches with a high level of evidence. Attention attraction methods are used to reduce pain and anxiety during invasive procedures by focusing attention on another stimulus. They should use attention attraction approaches appropriate to the child's age and developmental level. Attention attraction methods can be easily integrated into nursing care. It is important for pediatric nurses to know and use appropriate non-pharmacological approaches to improve the quality of nursing care and provide optimum care. There are many approaches to distraction. In this section, virtual reality, Buzzy® application, listening to music, distraction cards, balloon inflation, therapeutic play, cartoon movie and ShotBlocker® are discussed among the attention attraction methods used to reduce pain and anxiety in children. The aim of this chapter is to determine the effect of attention attraction methods used during invasive interventions in children on the child's pain and anxiety.
